Simba Arati Nominates County Public Service Board Chair as Deputy Governor

In a surprising turn of events, Kisii Governor Simba Arati has announced the nomination of Elijah Obebo, the county public service board chair, as his deputy governor. This decision comes after the removal of Robert Monda from office due to allegations of gross misconduct and corruption. The nomination of Obebo has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions within the political circles of Kisii County.

The announcement was made by Kisii County Assembly Speaker Philip Nyanumba during a sitting on Wednesday. Obebo, who has been serving as the county public service board chair for over six months, has been chosen to fill the vacant position of deputy governor pending approval by the County Assembly.

The impeachment of Robert Monda by the Senate was the catalyst for Arati’s decision to nominate a new deputy governor. Monda was accused of gross violation of the Constitution and law, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and offenses under national law. The Senate found him guilty on all charges, leading to his removal from office.

Following his impeachment, Monda has filed an appeal before the Kisii Law Courts, claiming that his removal was a witch-hunt orchestrated by Simba Arati’s camp. Monda received support from National Assembly Chief Whip and South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro and Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka. However, their support was unable to save Monda from losing his position as deputy governor.

The nomination of Elijah Obebo as the deputy governor has sparked mixed reactions within the political circles of Kisii County. Majority Leader Henry Moracha expressed confidence in Obebo’s abilities and believes he will assist Arati in fulfilling his agenda as the deputy governor. Moracha emphasized that Obebo’s party affiliation should not be a concern at this stage. On the other hand, UDA nominee Edna Kwamboka expressed hope that Obebo’s appointment would contribute to the accelerated development of the region under Arati’s leadership.

The next step in the process is for the County Assembly to vet and approve Obebo’s appointment. The committee on appointments and vetting will review Obebo’s suitability for the position and provide a report within 14 days. This process will determine whether Obebo will officially assume the role of deputy governor and support Arati in his governance responsibilities.

The nomination of Elijah Obebo as deputy governor by Simba Arati marks a significant political development in Kisii County. Obebo’s experience and expertise as the county public service board chair will be crucial in assisting Arati in fulfilling his duties as the governor. However, the decision has also been met with scrutiny and speculation, with allegations of political maneuvering and witch-hunting. The coming days will shed light on the fate of Obebo’s appointment and its implications for the governance of Kisii County.
