In March 2023, Deputy President Gachagua expressed his disappointment at the state of the Karen residence, citing its poor condition as the reason for his delay in moving in. He attributed the neglect to the previous administration under President Uhuru Kenyatta, suggesting that it was a deliberate act to undermine Deputy President William Ruto. Furthermore, Gachagua claimed that Ruto had personally been covering the utility bills for the residence.
However, in a recent update, Deputy President Gachagua officially relocated to his Karen residence in May 2023. Since then, he has been utilizing the residence for sub-Cabinet Committee meetings and engagements with diplomats, highlighting the progress made in the refurbishment process.
