Obasanjo Claims Western Democracy Ineffective for Africa
In a recent address at a consultation event in Abeokuta, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo argued that Western liberal democracy has failed to work effectively in Africa. Obasanjo contended that this model of democracy disregards Africa’s unique history, culture, and traditions.
According to him, it neglects the voice and needs of the majority of the population. Advocating for an alternative approach, Obasanjo proposed the concept of “Afro democracy” that would empower African nations to define and shape their own systems of governance.
Obasanjo highlighted the flaws in Western liberal democracy, emphasizing that once representation replaces direct participation, problems arise. He questioned whether the minority should be disregarded or excluded under the rule of the majority. He urged African countries to critically assess the performance of democracy in the West, considering its origins and the influence of colonial powers.
The former president called for a comprehensive reevaluation of governance systems, drawing from the rich cultural heritage and practices of African societies. He challenged attendees, including academic and political leaders, to think innovatively and offer recommendations for a more suitable and effective system of government that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens.
Obasanjo’s remarks seek to stimulate critical discussions on the limitations of Western liberal democracy in Africa and the need for a paradigm shift that aligns with the continent’s unique socio-cultural context and aspirations.
