Donald B Kipkorir: My History and Connections with Kenyan Presidents

Donald B Kipkorir, @DonaldBKipkorir, shares a remarkable journey of his experiences and relationships with Kenya’s presidents. Born and raised in Cheptongei, Elgeyo Marakwet, Donald emerged from humble beginnings as an orphan, lacking a notable lineage or material wealth. However, life had its own plans in store.

In 1997, a pivotal moment arose when Brigadier Boinett, then head of NSIS, and State House Comptroller Franklin Bett invited Donald to lead a small technical unit during President Daniel Arap Moi’s last elections. While he didn’t have the opportunity to know President Moi personally, it was a thrilling experience for the young Donald in his twenties.

Two years later, Senator Gideon Moi extended an invitation to Donald to serve as his lawyer, which opened doors he had never imagined. Through Gideon, Donald became acquainted with prominent figures, including Uhuru Kenyatta. Gideon’s friendship introduced Donald to President Moi and his family, fostering personal connections that endured even after President Moi left State House. Donald continued visiting President Moi in Kabarak.

Regrettably, Donald never had the chance to meet President Mwai Kibaki or see him in person. However, he did establish contact with President Kibaki’s children following his departure from office.

In a delightful turn of events, Donald reconnected with Uhuru Kenyatta when they both attended a public function at Nairobi National Park in December 2013. Despite their previous encounter being in 2002 when Uhuru lost the elections, Uhuru recognized Donald in the crowd and called him by name, inviting him to visit State House. Their friendship rekindled, and they met numerous times within Kenya and abroad. Donald describes Uhuru as a genial man.

Donald’s association with President William Ruto dates back to 1992 when they first met during their time at Kenya School of Law. Introduced by a relative named Victor K (now deceased), Donald and Ruto became close friends, supporting each other throughout Ruto’s deputy presidency. They shared mutual visits and camaraderie.

In 2022, despite supporting Raila Odinga’s presidency, Donald emphasizes that his friendship with Ruto remained intact. Notably, he chose not to vote in Cheptongei during the general elections, a decision made voluntarily. Today, Ruto serves as the President of Kenya, representing all citizens.

Donald’s ability to maintain friendships with all the presidents stems from his steadfast independence from political parties and his candid nature. He remains unswayed by political influences and has never accepted money from any politician, including the generous President Moi.

Reflecting on his life’s journey, Donald expresses gratitude for the remarkable transformation from a barefoot child to someone who walked on the manicured lawns of State House. His story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and the unanticipated paths life can take.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you … Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son! Rudyard Kipling, English Poet.
