The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has made an announcement regarding the promotion of 36,000 teachers.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has made an announcement regarding the promotion of 36,000 teachers across nine different grades.

This update follows closely on the heels of another round of promotions for 14,000 teachers. The TSC stated that the promotions will be distributed among primary and secondary schools, as well as teacher training colleges.

Specifically, 12,716 promotions have been designated for senior masters in grade C4, while senior teachers in grade C2 have the opportunity for 10,819 promotions. Additionally, 1,049 promotions have been set aside for headteachers under grade C5.

Furthermore, 700 positions have been allocated for senior teachers in special needs schools in grade C2, and another 200 positions for senior lecturers in Teachers’ training colleges.

Lastly, 108 promotional positions have been planned for senior principals. Interested individuals are required to submit their applications through the TSC portal by September 8, 2023, as stated in the announcement.

In parallel to this, the TSC recently conducted a closed-door meeting at the Kenya School of Government to discuss salary review talks.

However, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) rejected the TSC’s proposed new salary plan, arguing that it falls short of both the presidential directive and the advice from the Salary Remuneration Commission (SRC).

According to KUPPET, the TSC’s proposal suggests salary adjustments ranging from 2.4 to 9.5 percent, with the lowest-earning teachers receiving the highest percentage increase and the highest-earning teachers receiving the lowest.

KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori expressed disappointment, stating that the proposal was far below their expectations and did not align with the recommendations of President William Ruto and the SRC.

Misori questioned why the TSC deviated from the advised salary range of 7 to 10 percent, raising doubts about the sincerity and seriousness of the negotiation process.
